Since 1978, Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County has served the terminally ill and their families with physical, emotional and spiritual support—at absolutely no charge to any individual, any government agency, any insurance company. This year, in communities from Diamond Point to Joyce, VHOCC is serving an average of 123 patients per month. In addition to offering these individuals round-the-clock nursing care, hospice caregivers provide respite for families: a few hours away from the bedside for a doctor visit, a lunch with friends, or perhaps simply a nap. To ensure that respite care remains available, the Sequim Bay Yacht Club has raised funds each September with a regatta. In the past quarter century, the club has contributed almost $360,000 for respite care. This year, in addition to sailboat races, “Reach and Row for Hospice” will inaugurate a competition for anyone with an oar or paddle—rowing clubs, kayakers, canoers, paddleboarders. Anyone high school age and older is welcome.
